Princeton Concludes What Kind of Government America Really Has, and It’s Not a Democracy | PolicyMic
The news: A new scientific study from Princeton researchers Martin Gilens and Benjamin I. Page has finally put some science behind the recently popular argument that the United States isn’t a democracy any more. And they’ve found that in fact, America is basically an oligarchy.
An oligarchy is a system where power is effectively wielded by a small number of individuals defined by their status called oligarchs. Members of the oligarchy are the rich, the well connected and the politically powerful, as well as particularly well placed individuals in institutions like banking and finance or the military.
For their study, Gilens and Page compiled data from roughly 1,800 different policy initiatives in the years between 1981 and 2002. They then compared those policy changes with the expressed opinion of the United State public. Comparing the preferences of the average American at the 50th percentile of income to what those Americans at the 90th percentile preferred, as well as the opinions of major lobbying or business groups, the researchers found out that the government followed the directives set forth by the latter two much more often.
It’s beyond alarming. As Gilens and Page write, “the preferences of the average American appear to have only a minuscule, near-zero, statistically non-significant impact upon public policy.” In other words, their statistics say your opinion literally does not matter.
That might explain why mandatory background checks on gun sales supported by 83% to 91% of Americans aren’t in place, or why Congress has taken no action on greenhouse gas emissions even when such legislation is supported by the vast majority of citizens.
This problem has been steadily escalating for four decades. While there are some limitations to their data set, economists Thomas Piketty and Emmanuel Saez constructed income statistics based on IRS data that go back to 1913. They found that the gap between the ultra-wealthy and the rest of us is much bigger than you would think…

I said this when I was in fucking ninth grade and wrote a twelve paged paper on it and my teacher told me that I was a conspiracy theorist and that I needed a realistic topic. ok.

I highkey was saying this all along

I’m glad they worked so hard to figure out what literally every fucking poor person in this god damned country has known since our government’s fucking inception when its flawed design destined it to become a fucking oligarchy.

whoop there it is

No but this is literally how our government was designed. The Founding Fathers doubted that poor people, being poor and uneducated, could contribute at all to the political landscape. They took lengths to prevent the poor from participating in government at all- the first voters were required to be white men who owned land- usually around 20 acres, which pretty much eliminated any small farmers who hoped to vote.

can i borrow a pencil
teacher:
i don't know, CAN you?
student:
yes, also colloquial irregularities occur frequently in any language and since you and the rest of our present company understood my intended meaning, being particular about the distinctions between "can" and "may" is purely pedantic and arguably pretentious

((You guys don’t know steampunk until you head on over to this awesome little slice of heaven over here in Baltimore. This is a repurposed power plant that was built in 1900 that was converted into a Barnes and Nobel. It boasts a good selection of books, has the obligatory Starbucks inside with an awesome view of the city, but also has a really neat and informative aquarium that features wildlife you’d find in the bay! This is one awesome looking place to read. If you guys ever visit me up here in Maryland, we’d totally visit this Barnes and Noble.))

Lembas Bread (Lord of the Rings “authentic” Elvish bread)

Ingredients:

 2 ½ cups of flour
1 tablespoon of baking powder
¼ teaspoon of salt
½ cup of butter
1/3 cup of brown sugar
1 teaspoon of cinnamon
½ teaspoon honey
2/3 cup of heavy whipping cream
½ teaspoon of vanilla

Directions:

Preheat oven to 425F. Mix the flour, baking powder and salt into a large bowl. Add the butter and mix with a well till fine granules (easiest way is with an electric mixer). Then add the sugar and cinnamon, and mix them thoroughly.

Finally add the cream, honey, and vanilla and stir them in with a fork until a nice, thick dough forms.

Roll the dough out about 1/2 in thickness. Cut out 3-inch squares and transfer the dough to a cookie sheet.Criss-cross each square from corner-to-corner with a knife, lightly (not cutting through the dough).

Bake for about 12 minutes or more (depending on the thickness of the bread) until it is set and lightly golden.

***Let cool completely before eating, this bread tastes better room temperature and dry. Also for more flavor you can add more cinnamon or other spices***

as someone who has baked these A LOT

They are REALLY GOOD

and I am reblogging this because I KEEP LOSING MY RECIPE

Fuck yes. Now the real question is… Will they fill my stomach in one bite?

That flyer about Jews needing to 'register' in Ukraine is fake

cluin4looks:

khaleesi:

Phew.

I know I’ve said this before, but, seriously, don’t forget this just because the fliers were fake. The article this links to talks about how much “anxiety” the Jews of that city are feeling, and that’s because whether there are actual Nazi tactics going on or not, people on at least one side of the fighting in Ukraine are willing to go so far as to use Jewish citizens and their fears of antisemitism as a weapon. That can very easily turn into actual antisemitic behavior and puts a target on this community’s back. Just please keep an eye out.

SCP-354: The Red Pool

SCP-354 is a pool of red liquid located in northern Canada. The liquid is similar in consistency to human blood but is non-biological in nature. The density of the liquid increases proportionally with depth. Periodically, entities emerge from the pool and attempt to escape from the enclosure. Thusfar, nearly all creatures emerging from SCP-354 have been extremely hostile and highly dangerous. A log of entities which have emerged from SCP-354 can be found on the main article. One attempt at exploring the pool has been made. A log of the exploration can be found here.
